Where's the worst place to get crumbs?

Blogging Bites #72

Hey Reader!

I had a roommate in college who would freak out if any of us ate crumbly food in our beds because "crumbs in bed are the worstttt!" And I mean, she wasn't wrong 🤷‍♀️

Crumbs on your website though...those are good crumbs 😎🍞

Breadcrumbs are those links at the top of your web pages that let users backtrack from where they're at.

You might say they're like having a trail of breadcrumbs to follow so you don't get lost 👀

They help users navigate around your site, and they add structured data to help search engines understand and crawl it!

For food blogs, it's typically best to have your breadcrumbs follow a path like:

Homepage > Recipe Index > Primary Category Page

Yoast SEO is a great plugin that you can use to add/configure breadcrumbs to your site (more info here).

Now let's break it down! 👇

1) Use your site's name for the homepage anchor text.

Just like how we want to use specific anchor text for in-content internal links, using your site's name as the homepage link's anchor text increases its contextual value.

You can change this by navigating to the Yoast SEO plugin Settings > Advanced > Breadcrumbs

2) Make sure your recipe index is linking to your recipe index.

This sounds a bit silly, but a lot of blogs I've audited have had their recipe index breadcrumb linking to an "all recipes" category page instead of their actual recipe index.

If you're using Feast, this is an easy fix! Go into your Feast Plugin settings and scroll down to Yoast Breadcrumbs enhancements (under Recommended) and add your recipe index URL.

3) Use your primary category for breadcrumbs.

Lastly, make sure your posts link back to their primary category page! This is back in the Yoast SEO plugin settings.

Aaaand there you go - easy navigation with optimized breadcrumbs!

Happy blogging!
