Hey, friend! πŸ‘‹ happy Thursday!

There's been a lot of commotion about displaying keywords in recipe cards lately, so I thought I'd clear things up in this newsletter!

To clarify, we're talking about the keyword metadata you add to your recipe card right here:

So first off, what's the point of these keywords?

I was taught that these keywords were meant to help Google with voice search. For example, if I had a Nest speaker I could ask it to find me a recipe for strawberry cookies. Since I have "strawberry cookies" in my recipe card keywords, it might provide my recipe as a result. (WP Tasty has a brief article about it here.)

However, this turned out to be one of Google's many failed experiments. People don't really get recipes this way.

So if it doesn't really do anything for SEO, why do we include them?

Because Google takes it out on us if we don't πŸ˜…

Have you ever forgotten to put keywords in your recipe card and then received a notification from Google Search Console saying that your recipe is missing keywords?

We add the keywords so that Google doesn't hit us with this issue.

Okay so how do we hide them from our recipe card?

As Casey said above, if you're using WPRM there are 2 different ways you can do this! πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ Go into your WPRM Settings in WordPress. Scroll down to Advancedβ†’Recipe Metadata. Uncheck "Show keywords in template".

2️⃣ Go into your WPRM Template Editor in WordPress. Edit the template you're using and click Remove Blocks, then scroll down and delete the Meta Container that has the keywords.

To be super clear, we're still adding the keywords to the recipe card on the back end so Google can see them. They just aren't showing up on the front end.

I hope this helps! As always, reach out if you have any questions about this 😊

Alsooo speaking of WPRM - they're having a 30% off sale now through the end of January! If you're looking to get the plugin or upgrade to the Pro Bundle (what I have), now's a good time to do it! Here's my affiliate link if you want to use it πŸ€—
