Blogging Bites #29 - Modified date

Hey Reader!

For this week's tip, I wanted to address the following point in Google's recently updated helpful content guidelines.

This point seems to be causing food bloggers to worry about their blog post's published and modified dates. However, I'm guessing it stems from people purposely changing their post dates in order to trick Google into thinking their content is more fresh than it really is.

Now I don't think you're intentionally doing this, so you most likely do not have to worry about it.

Feast has an article explaining why modified dates don't matter (hint: they aren't a ranking factor), and Casey Markee also shared this in Food Bloggers Central:

That being said, if you want to prevent the date from changing, there are plugins out there that do just that. The one I use is called Limit Modified Date. Another recommended one is Change Last Modified Date.

With Limit Modified Date, I just check the box so that the date doesn't change when I make a minor tweak.

I know Google's Helpful Content Update was frightening, but don't stress too much over this specific point. Focus more on the content itself and proving that you're an expert in it. Casey Markee shared more of his thoughts on it here.

Happy blogging!
