Interaction to Next Paint 🎨

Blogging Bites #54

Hey there Reader!

Have you heard about this new Core Web Vital metric called Interaction to Next Paint (INP)??

It replaced an old metric, First Input Delay (FID), last month and has been failing for some websites.

Andrew from NerdPress talked about it a bit in yesterday's TopHatRank webinar and I thought I'd share what I took away from it!

First off, if you don't know what Core Web Vitals are, they're a set of metrics that basically grade how fast & technically user-friendly your site is.

If you have issues with them, Google will likely notify you in Google Search Console (GSC).

You can also check them with Google's handy PageSpeed Insights tool (but keep in mind that it's averaged over the past 28 days).

INP essentially grades your site's responsiveness. So, how fast does your site react if someone clicks on something, opens a mobile menu, adds something to a cart, etc?

Turns out, it's a tough grader! When I say blogs are "failing" INP, I mean it's greater than Google's acceptable range of 200ms or less.

Of course, it's typically faster on desktop than mobile.

So what's causing INP to fail? And what can we do to improve it?

What I took away from Andrew is that there are 2 main culprits that we're aware of at the moment: javascript and ads.

NerdPress is doing more research on it, but they shared this article with some helpful info.

Mediavine and Raptive are aware of the issue and looking into how to improve it. Apparently Mediavine is currently performing better than Raptive in this area.

Andrew's advice on improving it was to reduce the size of your pages.

For example, you can paginate your comments. I have mine set so that if there are more than 10 user comments on a post, it automatically creates a new "comments page".

This setting can be found in WordPress→Settings→Discussion.

You can also try reducing the amount of items in things like FSRI blocks. Instead of showing 12 featured recipes, maybe limit it to 4 or 6!

Overall though, don't worry about it too much - it should get better and it likely isn't a huge ranking factor.

Happy blogging!
